The Mavericks

Play The Hits

Out November 1, 2019

We were so lucky.

A pivotal, subscriber-only show at The Station Inn during AmericanaFest 2019 in Nashville – three sets leading up to Nathaniel Rateliff’s closer was the schedule.

Rateliff could not make it.

Americana Music Association Executive Director Jed Hilly pulled the big hat rabbit – calling in a favour from The Mavericks to replace Rateliff, their third set for the day.

Somehow they managed to fit all nine players onto the small stage (well, most of the time) and have the most infectious fun time. They kicked off with “Swingin’”, “Rolling Along” and “Back In Your Arms Again”.

The Mavericks – Eddie Perez – Columbia MO

The band has recorded some non-originals that are meaningful to them and we were able to hear their version of Ray Price’s “Don’t You Ever Get Tired Of Hurtin’ Me”, plus “Loving You”, Bruce Springsteen‘s “Hungry Heart”, “All You Every Do Is Bring Me Down” and “What A Crying Shame”.

To celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary, and pay tribute to artists and songs that have been part of the journey, The Mavericks give us a brand new album called Play the Hits.

It’s a beautiful gathering of influences from one of the best bands on the planet.

Track listing and songwriter credits:

“Swingin’” (John David Anderson, Lionel A Delmore)
“Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way” (Waylon Jennings)
“Blame It On Your Heart” (Harlan Howard, Kostas Lazarides)
“Don’t You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me)” (Hank Cochran)
“Before The Next Teardrop Falls” (Vivian Keith, Ben Peters)
“Hungry Heart” (Bruce Springsteen)
“Why Can’t She Be You” (Hank Cochran)
“Once Upon A Time” (feat. Martina McBride) (Barney Ales, Dave Hamilton, Clarence Paul, William Stevenson)
“Don’t Be Cruel” (Otis Blackwell, Elvis Presley)

  1. Rob, what is a “subscriber-only” show? LOVE that you saw them at Robert’s!! “Best band in the land!” Their set got cut short at RBBBQ due to rain. 🙁 But we’re going to Gruene Hall in TX to see them in November. 🙂

    • Sara, because of the demand for seats, you had to be an AmericanFest full badge registrant. A handful of shows during the week are like that
