New York-based Bill Scorzari returns with his fifth album, which is the first part of a double collection (the second instalment, Day 2, to be issued next year). He has a hypnotic way with searing lyrics and gruffly emotive vocals. Lying here are human emotions writ large on a canvas, both dark and ponderous. (I liked his 2022 album Crosswinds of Kansas, too – read our review).

I know, I know! How many albums can Charley Crockett release and be drooled over by yours truly? Dollar A Day is his second release this year, and, by my reckoning, has chalked up around eleven LPs in the past seven years. He must be the busiest man in showbiz and I’m thinking he doesn’t have time for extended mahjong sessions. Anywho, I just can’t help myself. This is another box of drawling earworms.

Speaking of Texas, Hayes Carll’s new album demonstrates a shift in tone towards a more personal perspective – less wryness, more earnest contemplation. The title sets the scene as Carll sets a more forgiving tone around the foibles and attitudes of the human race. Just because people do stupid and unpredictable things, we don’t have to judge and bemoan them. We all have our problems, just lighten up! Advice I should embrace. Tolerance is king.

Kathleen Edwards has a fascinating backstory, pivoting between releasing beautifully crafted albums and managing cafes in her native Canada and Florida. Billionaire is a supreme return to high form. Two acclaimed singer-songwriters Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson were behind the production desk and the sonics, arrangements and vibrancy are forcible. “Say Goodbye, Tell No One” (clip following) is one of the songs of the year.

OK, I confess, this one slipped through the LTTL cracks when released. Kieran Kane’s archive of music is nothing short of phenomenal. Every twist and turn in his career has been joyous and meticulous. The pairing with Rayna Gellert continues triumphantly. Creating beautiful music is so simple when you know what you are doing. And these two create fetching and stirring folk music effortlessly.

I was going to review this many months ago, until the release date was pushed back. I wanted to revisit this closer to when it’s on the shelves. Coming back to it, I was not disappointed. This is the second album from this Virginia-raised singer/songwriter, and it’s a winner. Great narratives are surrounded by catchy lines, nuanced insights and strong vocals. Will Overman deserves to get much attention from Stranger.
