Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.

The program was aired on 31 August.

Here is what we played.

That was Ashley Monroe, who was raised in Knoxville, Tennessee and is now based down the road in Nashville. Her new album Tennessee Lightning, was released this month, and that is my favourite track “Magnolia”

Albums Of The Month

2. Now to our Albums Of The Month. First up, this is Lucero frontman Ben Nichols‘ first solo album since 2009. It’s called In The Heart Of The Mountain and was recorded in Memphis. This track is entitled “The Darkness Sings”

3. Everything We Thought We Wanted is the third studio album from Los Angeles-based Americana band The Far West. Here is “Joshua Tree”.

4. Lost & Found Highway is the third album from the Montana-raised and Los Angeles-based duo.Joselyn and Don. I think the duo has a timeless sound – here is “Girl From The Mountain”.

5. Patty Griffin is from Austin, Texas and her eleventh album is called Crown Of Roses, which is her first major release in six years. I played one of the new songs on the last show. Here is another, the bluesy, jazzy “I Know A Way”.

6. I also played a song from Tami Nielsen’s newest release last show. This one is the title track, called “Neon Cowgirl”, and features Neil Finn of Crowded House.

7. The final of our Albums Of The Month comes from a brother sister duo The Wildmans, who are from a small town in Virginia that has an impressive musical heritage – Floyd. The album is Longtime Friend and this is the title song.

Other New Releases

8. Canada/US folk and bluegrass collective Sourwood reflects on the myth of the open road in their debut single, “On the Road”.

9. Born in Ottawa and raised in a household where music was both language and lifeline, Angelique Francis first hit the stage at age seven and was playing festivals by thirteen. The next year, she was already playing with music icons like Beth Hart and Shemekia Copeland. Not Defeated is her third album – here is “Train Coming”.

10. Former frontman of Men At Work, Colin Hay, has a new record out. It’s Called Man @ Work Volume 2. He’s touring all over the US and UK with appearances in Australia in December, which includes two shows at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Here is a live version of “Frozen Fields Of Snow”.

11. A lot of duos on the show today. This pair are Californian Jonny Pickett and Irish folk artist Lorkin O’Reilly. They go under the name of DUG and they will be playing shows in Australia in October, including at Out On The Weekend in Melbourne. A new album is in the wings, but for now, we have a single, “Livelong Day”.

12. We never seem to have a show without some music from Kentucky. And so it is today. Cole Chaney is releasing a new collection on September 19. Here’s one of the singles that has been made available – it is named “Alone?”.

13. ARIA and multiple Golden Guitar winner Sara Storer releases her eighth solo album Worth Your Love. It’s all original songs except this one, a nice cover of Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield” which came out way back in 1983.
