Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.

The program was aired on 27 July.

Here is what we played.

1. That was Yirrmal whom I saw play at the Valentino Safe Co. in Lilydale recently, to a full house. What a fantastic concert, and what a powerful voice that man has. That song was called “Dhaliwuy Bay”.

Thanks for joining us. I’m Jim Jacob. Today, we will be playing tracks from our favourite Albums of the Month, plus some new releases that I like. I hope you can stick around for the next hour.

2. Now to our albums of the month. First up, a duo from Oregon titled The Horsenecks. This song is named “Heel and Toe” from their album In the West.

3. Texas troubadour James McMurtry released his first album in six years, named The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy. This song is about getting old in the job amid changing ways – here’s “South Texas Lawman”.

4. From Kentucky, here is Kelsey Waldon with a new collection on the Oh Boy Record label, famous for the home of the late, great John Prine. This song has a nice driving feel – “Ghost of Myself”.

5. I played a Lukas Nelson song last month. Here’s another, from his just-out album American Romance – this is “Pretty Much”.

6. Stillhouse Junkies have come up with a concept album called The Ballad of Charlie Avalon, based on the trials and traps of the music business for a performer. This is one track, “Charlie’s Theme”.

7. The front man of the Virginia bluegrass and gospel group The Steel Wheels is Trenton Wagler. His first solo album is This Might Be My Prime, which is quite a departure from the band’s work. This is “My Prime”.

Other New Releases

8. When I was in Virginia on the Listening Through The Lens tour a while ago, I saw a Nashville-based band called Cordovas and really liked them. They have announced their first Australian tour this October. Here is one of their most popular songs, “This Town’s A Drag”.

9. The Autumn Defense is a band fronted by two members of the acclaimed band Wilco. The pair have a West Coast jazzy psychedelic sound. Their new album Here and Nowhere will be out in October. The first single is called “The Ones”.

10. Texas songstress Patty Griffin‘s latest collection, Crown of Roses is just out. Here is one track “Born in a Cage”.

11. The Lonesome Ace Stringband is a trio from Ontario, Canada. Their latest single, “Peep of Day”, is a nice blend of Celtic and North American influences, which I love.

12. Leftover Salmon is a bluegrass and old-time jam band that has many admirers and albums in the bank. This is the title track from their latest “Twisted Pine”, helped out by the evergreen Del McCoury.

13. Finally, New England folk songwriter Dan Pallotta reflects on the complexities of fatherhood and legacy in the powerful new release “Working Man’s Son”.
