Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.

Here is what we played.

Thanks for joining us. I’m Jim Jacob and today we will be playing tracks from our favourite Albums of the Month, plus there will be some new releases that I really liked. I hope you can stick around for the next hour.

1. This is Lukas Nelson (son of Willie) who has a new album out this week called American Romance. It’s a pretty good album but this song is a monster – a duet “Disappearing Light” with Stephen Wilson Jr.

2. Now, to our Albums Of The Month. Nate Currin’s ninth album Ghost Town was written after a massive breakup. A journeyman with over two decades of experience as a musician and numerous awards. Here’s “Farewell, Savanah”.

3. Another Kentuckian whose star is on the rise is S.G. Goodman with a new release named Planting By The Signs. This song is called “Satellite”.

4. Next up is Silverada with “Wake Me Up” from an album named after a very popular domino game in Texas called Texas 42.

5. The Steeldrivers fuse driving bluegrass with soul and ominous ballads, a lot of them about death. Here’s “On My Way” recorded at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis.

6 A band I love and have played before on this show is Watchhouse – I just love their sound. This is “All Around You” from their latest collection Rituals.

7. Next up some new releases. LA-based singer-songwriter Paul Givant, lead singer of Americana band Rose’s Pawn Shop, has released a new indie-folk-rock solo album Marigold. “Tidal Wave” is one of the tracks.

8. Peter Rowan has done just about everything. A member of Bill Monroe’s band, formed a group with Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead and has put out great music for decades, both solo and collaborations. His latest project is called Tales Of The Free Mexican Airforce. Here’s the bluesy “Alligator Alley”.

9. Melbourne-based Ruth Hazleton has a beautiful folk voice. She has a new song I like called “Letter From A Friend (Fire Song)” from her forthcoming album Heronbones.

10. Dr Ralph Stanley is one of the icons of bluegrass history. A few years back I visited his museum in a place called Clinton, Virginia with a small group of Australians on a Listening Through The Lens tour. Stanley’s son, Ralph Stanley II, got wind we were there and met with us for a chat. He even invited us to join his next show as his VIP guests which was very generous. Unfortunately we had other plans so we couldn’t manage it. Ralph II’s band is named The Clinch Mountain Boys and here’s their new single – a murder ballad entitled “Polly’s Revenge”. 11. Nashville fashion and outlaw country queen Nikki Lane has a new single, her first since 2022. It’s called “Woodruff City Limit” and it might be the best thing she has done. Lane will be visiting Australia later this year for Out On The Weekend in Melbourne and other dates.

12. Robert Forster is the co-founder of one of the great Australian indie bands The Go-Betweens. His ninth solo album is named Strawberries which is dripping with dry humour and observations. This is a great example – “Such A Shame“.
