Nate Currin’s ninth album was written after a massive breakup. And like many such albums, the material is vivid, passionate and compelling for the observer. A journeyman with over two decades of experience as a musician and numerous awards, Ghost Town is engrossing.

Another Kentuckian whose star is on the rise, S.G. Goodman‘s good career fortune was cut short by the death of a close friend and mentor, as well as her dog. Her work continued, but finally the grief surfaced, which led to some tough times and, finally, a creative avenue for this intricate and immensely thoughtful album. The title comes from the traditional Appalachian practice of using the lunar cycle for managing your life – decisions on family, planting and many other aspects – a world away from hi-tech and AI. Poetic and challenging.

This seminal Texas band changed its name not so long ago (from Mike and The Moonpies) and Texas 42 sees a significant slant away from the dance hall band with plenty of drinking and partying songs to a more nuanced viewpoint. Less swing, more rock. Front man Mike Harmeier, in the best Willie style, kicks out slower acoustic versions of some of the band’s back catalogue. It’s enthralling. (Texas 52 is a very popular domino game).

Outrun is an underlying poignant tribute to late founding member Mike Henderson who passed away in 2023. For this engaging and inspiring release, the band has teamed up with the legendary Sun Records in Memphis.

Andrew Marlin and Emily Franz started out in coffee shops in North Carolina and have steadily grown into the best and most delicately crafted songwriters and arrangers in the roots music world. Ruins is their third outing under the moniker of Watchhouse (formerly Mandolin Orange), and it is another conquest encapsulating wonderful narratives and insights to a level of mastery that not many attain.
