Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.

The program was aired on 25 May 2025.

Here is what we played.

Thanks for joining us. I’m Jim Jacob and today we will be playing tracks from our favourite Albums of the Month, plus there will be some new releases that I really liked. I hope you can stick around for the next hour.

1. I’m With Her are Sara Watkins, Aoife (“Eefa”) O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz and they have come together for the second time for a new collection entitled Wild and Clear and Blue. They share songwriting, play seamlessly together and their vocal harmonies are terrific. This song is called “Find My Way To You”.

2. I played a song from Muscadine Bloodline on our last show. Originally from South Alabama and now based in Nashville, the duo has released an album…And What Was Left Behind. The track I’m playing today is “Way Too High (2010)”.

3. Robert Deitch was born and raised in a “3 Church, 2 Tavern Town” in Iowa in the US. He has spent the past fifteen years in Nashville’s Music Row as a staff writer (he has had thirty songs recorded by other artists). He also has a great voice and Legacy is his fourth album – this track is “Goodbye Nashville” (No clip available – bummer).

4. Debuting in 2005, Oklahoma’s Turnpike Troubadours have released albums of the highest standard and have garnered a seriously strong fan base. Their songs have featured in the TV series Yellowstone and Landman. The new album is named The Price Of Admission and the opening track is “On The Red River”.

5 We played a song from Valerie June last show. Here is another track from her new album Owls, Omens, and Oracles which was produced by M. Ward and features guest appearances from Norah Jones and The Blind Boys of Alabama. This is “Superpower”.

6 The Waterboys are an Irish rock band of many years, led by frontman Mike Scott who continues to have a fascination with the late firebrand actor Dennis Hopper. He continues his homage with the latest album Love, Death and Dennis Hopper which features Fiona Apple, Steve Earle and Bruce Springsteen. Here is “I Don’t Know How I Made It” with Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes.

7. Now to some new releases. After twenty years of touring with Virginia roots/gospel/bluegrass outfit The Steel Wheels, front man Trenton Wagler is releasing a solo album called This Might Be My Prime, set to release in June. This is the first single “I’ve Got Some Work To Do”.

8. James McMurtry will release The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy next month, which will be his first album in four years. A great storyteller, here is “Sailing Away”.

9. Now for three new Australian singles. Melbourne-based singer, songwriter Jeb Cardwell has opened for Steve Earle and Tony Joe White and plays guitar for Kasey Chambers. I have his new single which is due for release on June 6. It’s called “Boomerang” (no clip available, bummer).

10. Nigel Wearne released his new single “8 Minutes (Acoustic)” which marks a return to his roots as a folk songwriter. Nigel will return to the US this June/July for another overseas tour.

11. Minor Gold return with the striking “Moonlight Silver Highway”, the third single from their forthcoming album Way to the Sun.

12. Tami Neilson is a Canadian now living in New Zealand. I saw her at Port Fairy a few years back and she has a big voice. Tami has a new album called Neon Cowgirl out on 11 July. This is one of the tracks “You’re Gonna Fall” with J.D. McPherson.

13. Blues greats Taj Mahal and Keb Mo have reunited after almost ten years. Their new album is called Room On The Porch and was released this week. Here is “Junkyard Dog”.

14. Stillhouse Junkies are an acoustic band that move between bluegrass, Texas Swing and blues. They have single called “Lord Have Mercy” from their forthcoming album The Ballad of Charlie Avalon. Do they sound like The Band, or what!
