The King of Americana triumphs yet again, this time with a solo acoustic collection filled with his trademark nuanced and intense songwriting. It is the first outing since Isbell split with fellow singer/songwriter Amanda Shires but there are no critical outbursts here, more graceful reflections about love gained and lost and changing perspectives. Isbell had a period of damaged vocal cords and, with therapy, he has come back with an even more expansive range.

I saw Valzza live at The Grey Eagle in Asheville two years ago and was impressed by her graceful presence and a voice eerily reminiscent of the great English folk singers. Her third record is named after a friend’s basement apartment in Portland, Oregon and it reflects her time there and, seeking fresh inspiration, in New Orleans where she now lives. The album has a calm fluidity and a soft burn that draws the listener in.

I have been enamoured of Sunny War‘s music for quite some time (read our review of her 2023 album HERE). Her music has always resisted classification, but War’s latest is even more adventurous in some sense, with a palette of folk/punk/rap enveloped in a melodic casing and an uncommon perspective of an outsider with a difficult upbringing. This is another giant stride for a bewitching artist.
