Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.

The program was aired on 30 March 2025.

Here is what we played.

1. That was a new single from Melbourne singer/songwriter Sime Nugent. He’s been a member of The Wilson Pickers and the duo Sweet Jean, but musically has been quiet for a while, spending time sculpting and furniture making. The new song was called “The Crow” under the new moniker Sime Nugent & The Capes, his first new music in nine years, with an album to come.

Thanks for joining us. I’m Jim Jacob and today we will be playing tracks from our best Albums of the Month, music from artists I saw at Port Fairy, and some of our favourite new releases. I hope you can stick around for the next hour.

2. Now to our Albums Of The Month. We’ll start with “Granite Mills”, the second single from Arcadia, the long-awaited album from Alison Krauss & Union Station. The vocals are from a new member of the band – Russell Moore.

3. Frontman of The Jayhawks Gary Louris has released his third solo album called Dark Country, which is essentially just him and his guitar. Here’s “Getting Older”.

4. Now for some country soul from The Delines. We’ve already played one song from their very good album Mr Luck & Ms Doom – here’s another – “The Haunting Thoughts”.

5 Flatland Cavalry hail from Lubbock in northwest Texas (Buddy Holly is its most famous export). Formed in 2012, the album Flatland Forever was released late last year and is a special deal for the band as it celebrates a ten-year career. This song is “A Life Where We Work Out”.

6 This month I travelled to the Port Fairy Folk Festival, and so I wanted to play some of the music I liked there. We will start with Jon Muq, a Ugandan who now lives in Nashville. As well as some excellent original music, he has a great personality and many colourful stories to tell. The track I’m about to play is “One You Love”.

7. Bonny Light Horseman is a fascinating collaboration between three musicians with impressive careers in their own right. The trio’s name is taken from a Napoleonic folk song. Keep Me On Your Mind/See You Free is their third album and can be called a double with two titles and twenty songs spanning over an hour. Here’s “Old Dutch”.

8. Hannah Aldridge grew up on the muddy banks of Muscle Shoals in Alabama which I visited a few years back. She put on a rocky set at Port Fairy including this song “Dorero”.

9. Scottish band Skerryvore have been together for almost twenty years with seven studio albums. It was a high-energy performance fronted by electric guitar and dual bagpipes. This is “Take My Hand” from their album of the same name, which came out in 2018. It’s a good example of the band’s style.

10. From Texas, Ruthie Foster has been nominated for many Grammys and has won several blues awards. Her career has moved from folk to jazz to soul. Her latest album is called Mileage, and this is the title track, which talks about the pride in her journey.

11. Finally from our Port Fairy artists is the renowned Todd Rundgren. He led the band Nazz, a 60’s psychedelic rock group and got famous for the 1972 album Something/Anything? on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocals and produced it. Here’s the classic “I Saw The Light” from that release.

12. Now to some new releases. Australia’s The Cruel Sea has a new album out called Straight Into The Sun. Here’s one of the tracks “King Of Sorrow”.
