Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.
The latest program was aired on 26 January 2025.
Here is what we played.
1. That was Billy Strings with “Seven Weeks in County” from his 2024 album Highway Prayers. That was one of our highest rated albums of the year and today and next program we will play you our favourite song from all of our favourite albums of last year.
2. Bonny Light Horseman is a collaboration between three musicians with impressive careers in their own right – Anais Mitchell, Josh Kaufman and Eric D. Johnston – and they will be touring Australia early in the year. I’m looking forward to seeing them live at the Port Fairy Folk Festival this March. The album is called Keep Me On Your Mind/See You Free and the song coming up is “When I Was Younger”.
3 Charley Crockett gifts us yet another full release which features his golden voice and cowboy twang arrangements. He has toured Australia many times and his shows have grown to much bigger venues, both here and the USA. This is the title track from his album $10 Cowboy.
4. San Franciscan Chuck Prophet released Wake The Dead his first album since recovery from stage four lymphoma and he has collaborated here with both ¿Qiensave?, a band of brothers from a farming community and his regular outfit The Mission Express. Here’s the uplifting “It’s A Good Day To Be Alive”.
5. It’s been sixteen years, but worth the wait. The Cure‘s fourteenth album is another journey of elongated intros, hypnotic riffs and swirling orchestrations, with vocalist Robert Smith‘s love lyrics still sounding poignant and fresh. Here’s “End Song” from the album Songs Of A Lost World.
6 As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again is The Decemberist’s ninth studio album and the first after a six-year hiatus. They are a folk rock band from Portland, Oregon and the song I’ve chosen is “The Black Mariah”.
7. About to tour Australia, Nashville couple Gillian Welch & David Rawlings released another very well received album called Woodland, named after the recording studio that they own. This song is called “Howdy Howdy”.
8. The Past Is Still Alive may be Hurray For The Riff Raff‘s finest album to date. From New Orleans, Louisiana, here’s “Colossus of Roads”.
9. Durham, North Carolina folk singer/songwriter Jake Xerxes Fussell has delivered a collection (his fifth) of searing stories with minimal arrangements. The song is “Leaving Here, Don’t Know Where I’m Going” from the album When I’m Called.
10. After promising to release only five studio albums under his own name, Sturgill Simpson turns to the moniker of Johnny Blue Skies for the release of Passage Du Desir. This track is one I really like “One For The Road”.
11. The emotion and intensity of Morgan Wade on her fourth album Obsessed stands out. This is “Crossing State Lines” from that album.
