Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.
The program was aired on 24 November.
Here is what we played.
1. That was Mike Thomas with “Hell In High Water” written in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene on the east coast of the USA. All proceeds from the song go to relief and recovery from the storm.
Thanks for joining us. I’m Jim Jacob and I’ve just come from the Verandah Music Festival in Evandale, a very nice event in the picturesque town of Evandale. In today’s show, we will feature some tracks from our Albums Of The Month, listen to some artists from last week’s Mountaingrass festival and pick the eyes out of the best new releases.
2. The next six tracks are from our favourite Albums Of The Month. Haley Heynderickx has just released her second album called Seed of a Seed. She has a unique finger-picking style on the guitar and this song is called “Foxglove”.
3. From San Francisco Chuck Prophet has a long history of making outstanding records, almost two dozen. He has just released an album with Spanish and South American touches called Wake The Dead and it contains a lot of catchy tunes. Here’s one – it’s called “Sally Was A Cop”.
4. I saw Amythyst Kiah in Virginia a couple of years ago. Her latest album Still + Bright is her third and has a lush, full sound to add to her powerful voice. This song features Billy Strings, no stranger to this show. It’s entitled “I Will Not Go Down”.
5. Sydney’s Jack Nolan has been performing since the mid-1990s and has a CV of six solo albums and frontman of a band called The Kelly Gang. Written in 2023, his album Songs For Hemingway is an all-acoustic outing. The track I have chosen is “Mother Of All Storms”.
6 To continue the theme of climate today, this track is “The Changing Weather” from Australian now living in Nashville Jordie Lane, taken from his recent full-length release Tropical Depression.
7. The last of our favourite albums is Heaven, Or Someplace As Nice from the very gifted songwriter Josh Ritter who enlisted the help of renowned jazz guitarist Bill Frisell. It’s a very warm album. Ritter’s song coming up was recorded by Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead a few years ago and I have heard that Bob Dylan has been including his version during some of his shows. Here’s Ritter with “Only A River”.
8. I travelled to Bright last weekend to witness Mountaingrass. Three days of bluegrass and old-time music set in three halls right in the middle of that Alpine town. One of the best acts we saw was Australia’s The Davidson Brothers. They were very impressive. Here’s “Transpacific” from an album they put out back in 2014 – Wanderlust.
9. High Fidelity hails from Nashville and is dedicated to preserve the bluegrass music of the 1950’s and early 1960’s. As well as seeing one of their sets on stage, I sat in a harmony singing workshop that the band managed, which was enlightening. This song is “South Bound Train”.
10. From Portland, Oregon The Delines this week announced a new record which will be out in February next year via the Love Police label. Here’s the first single “Left Hook Like Frazier”.
11. Josh Rennie-Hynes is originally from Brisbane and released a couple of solo records, as well as recording and appearing with a duo called The Ahern Brothers. Josh moved to Nashville a few years ago and is still living in that city, just getting married in fact. A few weeks back Josh released his latest full-length release Fragile Like A Bomb. The track we have picked out is entitled “Dreams”.
12. Texan Charley Crockett has just received his first Grammy nomination. To celebrate, he has issued a brand new standalone single called “Mr Nashville”.
13. Australian songstress Freya Josephine Hollick has just released a heartbreaking new single “Ribbons”.
14. From the Canadian province of Alberta, folk singer Ryland Moranz has been nominated for a folk music award. This track is “The Hell Of This Town”.
