Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.
The program was aired on 27 October.
Here is what we played.
1. That was Troy Cassar-Daley with “Ready For The Rain”. Troy has won an impressive 40 Golden Guitar Awards and his latest album Between The Fires was released in May this year and was recorded in his Mum’s lounge room in Halfway Creek in rural New South Wales. She died in 2022.
2. The next six tracks you will hear are from our favourite Albums Of The Month. I played a little of Billy Strings last week but couldn’t quite fit in the whole track. So I thought I’d play another song, in full, from his new album Highway Prayers. This one is called “Leaning on a Travelin’ Song”.
3. Sweet Critters is Caleb Caudle’s sixth studio LP, nicely put together by John Paul White and Ben Tanner, at the duo’s Florence, Alabama studio. Here’s “The Brim”.
4. Jeffrey Foucault’s first release of original material in six years is a slow burner. The Universal Fire follows the death of his friend and drummer Billy Conway who passed away in 2021 and the songs were created out of grief and reflection. Foucault enlists the signature percussion of John Convertino of Calexico. Here’s the title track.
5. From Memphis, Kelley Mickwee gives us her first solo album in a decade after working in a band setting. Everything Beautiful was recorded in Austin, Texas. The album is rootsy with a huge dash of soul.
6 Next up is a great debut. Nashville-based artist Sadie Campbell has released an album called Metamorphosis with eleven tracks that cover some honest, raw emotions. Her voice I think is outstanding. This is “Saved”.
7. Van Walker returns after his marvellous 2020 album with Healing Descent, with ten intense songs written around the time of the first major COVID lockdown. Walker recorded the collection in just four days, teaming up again with expat. Australian Chris Altmann. Here’s “Summer Thunder”.
8. Now on to some other new releases. Dennis Comino is from Brisbane and was one of twelve emerging Australian artists offered a place at the CMAA Junior Academy of Country Music in 2021. His debut EP is called Dead In The Water and this is the title track.
9. Australian troubadour Paul Kelly will be releasing a studio album, his 29th, called Fever Longing Still which will be out 1 November. Paul has just announced a major venue tour next March with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and Fanny Lumsden, which should be excellent. This song is the opening track called “Houndstooth Dress”.
10. Riley Catherall has a quiet presence about him. A member of Lachlan Bryan and the Wildes, he released his second solo album this year called The Light, The Beautiful Liar. This track is entitled “Bark At The Moon”.
11. Tami Neilson is originally Canadian, but now living in New Zealand. I have seen her perform at Port Fairy and she has a powerful voice and stage presence. Her new album was recorded in Texas and features songs from Willie Nelson’s songbook. The album is aptly called Neilson Sings Nelson and the track I’m playing next is called “I Never Cared For You”.
12. Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms played at Mountaingrass festival last November under the banner of The Foghorn Stringband. The pair will be releasing a new album under their own names called Gold In Your Pocket which will be out 15 November. Here’s a sneak preview of that release with a traditional song called “He’s Gone”.
13. From the San Francisco Bay area, Effie Zilch are a duo with a new EP out next month. Here’s the bluesy “Up and Down Blues”.
14. Shane Pendergast is a folk artist from Prince Edward Island in Canada. This song is simple but a little hypnotic, his new single called “Crossing The Bridge”.
