Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.

The program was aired on 29 September.

Here is what we played.

1. That was “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom)”, from multiple Grammy winner Dwight Yoakam who is releasing his first album in nine years. Brighter Days will be out on November 15. That single also featured Post Malone. In today’s show, we will feature some tracks from our Albums Of The Month, pick the best new releases including some great Australian songs and preview other tracks that will be available soon.

2. The next four songs are from our favourite albums. The first is from Toronto-based singer-songwriter Julian Taylor. It’s his third and is called Pathways which was released last Friday and features his calm and deep vocals. This song is called “Sixth Line Road”.

3. Laurel Lewis admired Americana icon Rodney Crowell so much, she, at age eighteen, enrolled in one of his private songwriting camps. Crowell contacted her the day after the camp, offering to help her out. Laurel Lewis, the album, was produced by Crowell on his own record label and contains some beautiful storytelling. Here is “If You Want To Move On”.

4. If you like Spaghetti western touches, strains of movie soundtracks, sounds of great expanses and riding rhythms, you should check out Nathan Jacques‘s Dark Wanderer And The Bounty Heart. Here is “Loveless Country”. (sorry, no clip available)

5. Brothers Willy and Cody Braun are the front men of the Austin, Texas band Reckless Kelly who has been around since the mid 90’s. An alt. country band (recipients of Grammy and Ameripolitan Awards), they released this month a new collection called The Last Frontier and this song, which features Kelly Willis, is the title track.

6 Now, onto some new releases from the US. Ray LaMontagne has a soulful voice. His ninth album is called Long Way Home and is available now. Here’s the title track.

7. Here’s something a little quirky. Canadian band Petunia & The Vipers add to the legend of US gunslinger Billy The Kid with a song named after the outlaw.

8. Time for new Australian music. Melbourne-based folk singer Bill Jackson who with his brother Ross has a way of bringing Australian history to life through song, has finished a new single. “Byron’s Trinity” is about three close friends that have had a large impact on Bill and who have passed away.

9. Australian indie and roots music quartet Green Mohair Suits return with ‘Hell or High Water’, the first single from their fifth album Stan Wella, released last Friday.

10. In 2023 I enjoyed seeing The Humbuckin’ Pickups at the Maldon Folk Festival in regional Victoria, which featured Vinny Russell. The next year I saw him perform at Mountaingrass under the moniker of The Colvin Brothers. Now Vinny has gone solo under the intriguing name Rufous Whistler. His first single is called “River Gum Trees”.

11, I mentioned last month being impressed with The Pleasures at Port Fairy Folk Festival this year. After Catherine Britt and Lachlan Bryan collaborated on an album last year and a single I played on last month’s show, the pair have another song for us called “Where The Money Goes”.

12. Back to the USA with a band called New Dangerfield who have released a timeless folk song called “Put No Walls Around Your Garden”.

13. Finally, to the powerful voice of outlaw country siren India Ramey who has released three albums in pretty quick succession. The latest is called Baptized By The Blaze and the song I’ve chosen is entitled “Never Going Back”.
