Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.

The program was aired on 25 August.

Here is what we played.

1. Multi-Grammy nominee Shemekia Copeland was raised in Harlem and made her first stage appearance with her father (bluesman Johnny Copeland) at New York’s famed Cotton Club when she was eight. Since her debut record in 1998, Copeland has become a blues and r’n’b staple. “Only Miss You All The Time” is from her latest record on the Alligator Records label called Blame It On Eve which will be released next week. (No clip available).

2. Last show, we played the first single from the album Woodland from Nashville pair Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. The album was released just on Friday. Here’s the second single “Hashtag”.

3. Dan Tyminski is a fourteen-time Grammy winner. His new album Dan Tyminski: Live From The Ryman is a great way to experience him in a live setting. This next song has become a staple of his live show, made famous when he was in Alison Krauss’s band. It’s called “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Hoe Corn”.

4. Speaking of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, it was built in 1864 and is regarded as one of the best live music venues in the USA. It certainly is a great place to see performers at their best. Jason Isbell with his band the 400 Unit will release a second live album in October. Here’s “King of Oklahoma” from Live From The Ryman, Vol. 2

5. Jenny Don’t and the Spurs are based in Oregon in the USA and have toured Australia twice. This song is “Flying High” from their album Broken Hearted Blues which came out in June this year.

6 Nashville-based country-folk duo Wild Ponies revealed a new album on Friday called Dreamers. This song has an infectious hard-edged riff and it’s entitled “Wind Love and Water”.

7. Now to another Nashvillian Kevin Gordon. Kevin has been battling throat cancer and has not put out an album for six years. In September his new LP The In Between will be available. This is the first single “You Can’t Hurt Me No More“ which he co-wrote with Kim Richey.

8. Now to some Australian singles which have just become available. Another album release this Friday just gone is from Melbourne duo Small Town Romance. This song is “Wild Boys” and the album is named Home Fires.

9. Van Walker was raised in Penguin, Tasmania and is now living in Melbourne. I saw him at Port Fairy in 2023 with a full band. He will be releasing in September 2024 another solo record called Healing Descent. Just out this week is the jangling and catchy single “Winter’s Last Words“.

10. Speaking of Port Fairy, The Pleasures put on a great show there this year. The Beginning Of The End was the debut collaboration between Catherine Britt and Lachlan Bryan and it looks like they will team up again as a new single was unveiled last month. It is appropriately called “Let’s Go Again”.

12. OK back to the USA now, and closing with The Steep Canyon Rangers and another live track. The band are based in Brevard, North Carolina and the song is “Fare Thee Well, Carolina Gals” from the record Live At Greenfield Lake.
