Welcome to our recap of the Listening Through The Lens Radio Program, broadcast on City Park Radio, on the last Sunday of every month.
The program was aired on 28 July, 2024.
Here is what we played.
1. Nashville pair Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have announced their first album of new material since 2017. It will be a ten-track release on August 23 called Woodland, named after their recording studio in their hometown. One single has been revealed. It’s called “Empty Trainload Of Sky”.
2. Now to our favourite Albums of the Month. First up is the Californian band AJ Lee & Blue Summit with their third album called City Of Glass. We played one of their songs in our last show. Here’s another that features the melodic voice of AJ Lee entitled “I Still Think Of Her”.
3. We talked with John Craigie at the Port Fairy Folk Festival this year who told us about the vibrant music scene in Portland, Oregon on the US west coast. Here’s another outfit from that neck of the woods. The Decemberists’ new album is their ninth, but first for six years. The collection is called As It Was, So It Will Be Again and the song next up is “Don’t Go To The Woods”.
4. Dallas singer-songwriter Evan Boyer also featured on our last show. Here’s another track from one of our rated albums, “Cedar Creek”.
5. Ruth Moody was born in Australia but has lived in Canada for many years and became most famous as a founding member of The Wailin’ Jennys. Her second solo is named Wanderer and the track coming right up is “Already Free”.
6 Wood Box Heroes contains seasoned players who are amazing musicians presenting an interesting blend of rock, bluegrass and folk. Here is a tune called “Way of The Whippoorwill”.
7. Now to some Australian singles which have just become available. Here is Lachlan Bryan and the Wildes‘s new single “The Continuing Saga” which has been lifted off a new record to be revealed. Bryan has just finished a tour of England.
8. Minor Gold are Tracy McNeil and Dan Parsons and they released their self-titled debut in 2023. They are currently touring the USA and to celebrate, there’s a new single with Parsons taking the lead. It’s the gentle “Over You”.
9. Yet another Australian on tour overseas is award-winning indie-folk singer Ernest Aines who is about to play the Cambridge Folk Festival in the UK. This song “Don’t Mind Me” is a preview of his forthcoming full release which will be out in early 2025.
10. Anybody remember Max Merritt and the Meteors? This song “She Showed Me To Her Room” has got that same easy-paced and stark production with the vocals out front just like Max Merritt. It’s from a Melbourne band called Central Rain which is Luke Thomas with some great local players helping out. One of Australia’s best guitarists Ash Naylor has called this tune a modern-day classic. See what you think.
11. Kerryn Fields is New Zealand-born but now based in Melbourne. She has a five-song EP out called The Folk Singer. Here is the title song which I really like.
12. OK back to the USA now with a cinema theme. Dan Tyminski has played in Alison Krauss’s renowned backing band Union Station and released many fine albums of his own. In the movie O Brother Where Art Thou? starring George Clooney, Tyminski provided the vocals for Clooney. Next month Tyminski’s new live recording at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville will be out. Here’s the first taste “Whiskey Drinking Man” from Live At The Ryman. Hold on to your hats, the band is hot.
13. Texan Charley Crockett might be trying to get an award for releasing the most albums. His second release of this year is a follow-up to $10 Cowboy and is called $10 Cowboy Chapter II: Visions of Dallas. This song, “Killers Of The Flower Moon”, did not make it onto the soundtrack of the movie of the same name, but maybe it should have.
14. Jesse Daniel was another of our Albums Of The Month, full of classic-sounding country and honky tonk. Here’s “Golden State Rambler” to finish us off for today.
