New album Balsam Range

Bluegrass A-listers Balsam Range
New Album ‘ Kinetic Tone’
Out 1 December, 2023
After some fifteen years of music-making with its original lineup, North Carolina’s Balsam Range has had to adapt to the departure of Darren Nicholson. With the upcoming strident and dynamic Kinetic Tone, their tenth collection for Mountain Home Music Company, the group shows a definitive bold push to the future embracing mandolin virtuoso Alan Bibey to the award-winning quintet.
With three of the new songs having already garnered much positive attention on the bluegrass scene, Kinetic Tone will deliver to its many fans on many fronts.
“When Balsam Range went into the studio at the beginning of 2023 to begin this album, it was immediately obvious to everybody present that something was different. A new level of excitement and joy of creating was present. ‘Kinetic Tone’ is a not-so-well-known musical term defining how sounds move from being static to changing tone by the application of ENERGY. Could be a voice. Could be a guitar. Could be voices and instruments acting in concert. We would argue that it can also be a shared mindset of a musical group.”
liner notes to Kinetic Tone

Kinetic Tone is an ample demonstration that Balsam Range continues their renowned mix of smooth and hard grooves and sweet harmonies, but also adds a new edge to their lyrics which is evident in songs like “We’ll All Drink Money”.
Change IS good.
