Cordovas Release “High Roller” Song

Album ‘The Rose of Aces’ Out August 11, 2023

Cordovas‘ last album That Santa Fe Channel was one of our top twenty releases in 2018. It was produced by The Milk Carton Kids’ Kenneth Pattengale in East Nashville, in a converted barn with hours spent fine-tuning a winning sound – shades of The Band, classic chord shifts, layered harmonies.

Their set that year at Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion was memorable, boasting a three-pronged vocal attack, a powerful blend of southern rock, blasting country and Americana.

Now Cordovas have premiered “High Roller,” the second single to their upcoming fourth studio album The Rose of Aces which will be released via ATO Records on August 11.

The other song released from The Rose of Aces was the impressive album opener “Fallen Angels of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. According to the media release, the band has long cited influences like the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and the aforementioned The Band and it totally shows, with a striking blend of country rock jamming and effective songwriting.

The background of frontman Joe Firstman makes captivating reading – raised by a weed-dealing veteran father and an opera singer mother, he left home and settled into a career as a songwriter opening for Sheryl Crow and Willie Nelson. Times of alcohol and missed opportunities eventually led to a stint as TV host Carson Daly‘s house band host and then as the frontman of Cordovas.

But the importance of the collective input is key here including co-conspirator guitarist Lucca Soria and the band has expanded to five since 2018 (the line-up can be fluid depending on live and studio projects). The album title comes from an imagined Tarot card based on hotel owners Ace and Rose down in Mexico.
