‘What It Is’

Out February 15 2019

Texas singer-songwriter Hayes Carll will be issuing his sixth album What It Is (via Dualtone) on February 15.

What It Is follows his 2016 album Lovers and Leavers, one of our favourites for that year, here at Listening Through The Lens.  The earlier release covered some strong and personal emotions – his marriage, divorce, fatherhood.  In the intervening time, Carll has become engaged to songwriter Allison Moorer which should provide a whole new canvas should he choose to go that autobiographical way again.

The first taste of what to expect comes through “None’Ya”, the first single and the album opener (see clip below).  Carll told Rolling Stone Country  about the song:

“It’s a song about Allison, she’s wildly eloquent but sometimes uses her own made-up language.  She’s really practical, but will do things like paint the front porch ceiling turquoise because she believes it keeps the evil spirits out.  She’s a unicorn and I just try to enjoy her magic and not screw it up.”

Moorer co-produced the record alongside Brad Jones and co-wrote some of the material as well.  Other collaborators include Matraca Berg, Adam Landry, Lolo and Charlie Mars.

Following the announcement, Carll has released a series of headlining tour dates.
