Steep Canyon Rangers
To Release Out In The Open
January 26 2018
The Grammy Award-winning, North Carolina-based Steep Canyon Rangers are set to augment their rich recording history with Out In The Open (via Ramseur Records, out January 26 2018). The band is rooted in a bluegrass aesthetic but have many strings to their bow as they easily move to country and folk rock. In striving for a more contemporary sound, the band has turned to past producers such as Larry Campbell and Jerry Douglas.
Out In The Open looks like adding to the band’s versatile catalogue with highly-credentialled Joe Henry taking the production reins. As a solo artist, collaborator with Billy Bragg and three-time Award-winning producer, Henry’s influence should prove to be very interesting. The news follows on from the September 2017 release of The Long Awaited Album, the renewed collaboration with Steve Martin.
In July 2017, Steep Canyon Rangers arrived at Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville, North Caroline, an intimate studio facility built, owned, and operated by legendary producer Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Let’s Active). Having not previously discussed Henry’s plans, the band was surprised to discover that their producer – with the invaluable help of engineer/mixer Jason Richmond – intended to record in classic fashion, with all six members singing and playing in a room with no overdubs.
In addition to the new release, 2018 will also see the band uniting with their local Asheville Symphony for a series of live performances and the recording of yet another new album. This follows
