“This time I’m walkin’ to New Orleans
I’m walkin’ to New Orleans
I’m going to need two pair of shoes
When I get through walkin’ me blues
When I get back to New Orleans”

“Walking To New Orleans” by Robert Charles Guidry (Bobby Charles), Antoine Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew

Well, I won’t actually be walking to New Orleans.  But I am returning, finally, to this wonderful, foot-stomping, music-drenched, flood-prone, voodoo infused, unique culinary location caressing gracefully the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.

I first visited the Crescent City in Easter 2005 (five months before Hurricane Katrina) and returned there (April/May) for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.  I haven’t been able to get back since.

But now I will be there again, in October 2014, and experience for the first time, the ninth annual Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival.

The 2014 line-up
Los Lobos, Bobby Rush, Ana Popovic, Denise LaSalle, Valerie June, Joe Louis Walker, Mel Waiters, Selwyn Birchwood, Papa Mali, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Little Freddie King, Vasti Jackson, Mia Borders, Luke Winslow King, Marc Stone, Brother Tyrone & the Mind Benders, Leo “Bud” Welch and King James & the Special Men

Festival details

This free event takes place October 17 to 19 2014 in New Orleans’ Lafayette Square Park.  It’s produced and presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.

Festival review

“I’ve been to many blues festivals in the U.S. and Europe, and I can honestly say that the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival is a charming piece of musical heaven.  If you are planning a trip to New Orleans and want to experience the city and its wonderful music without enormous crowds, put this October, free festival on your musical bucket list.” – Art Tipaldi, Editor, Blues Revue Magazine

I’ve got to keep on walkin’
New Orleans is my home
That’s the reason while I’m gone
Yes, I’m walkin’ to New Orleans”
