Bob Dylan’s New Song

Covering Frank Sinatra

Bob Dylan and Neil Young – are they trying to outdo each other in throwing surprises to their fans?

Bob has put up a new song on his website, a cover of “Full Moon And Empty Arms”.  The song was released in 1945 and written by Buddy Kaye and Ted Mossman, who based the melody on Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.  It was popularized by Frank Sinatra, of whom Dylan is an avid admirer.

The song features some lovely pedal steel and a crooned, clear-voiced vocal by the 72-year old Dylan. It’s different.

Listen here and you be the judge.

  1. Bob is consciously putting on the mantle of keeper of the American music tradition. Plus the great songbook suits you when you’re 73! Especially when your own songbook has become a mother lode in itself.

    • Good point. Interesting that he is releasing this, not that long after his Christmas album. When you have achieved just about everything, it must be a challenge to continue to be fresh. What is admirable for him and Neil Young is their penchant for fearless unpredictability
