Martin Simpson – Vagrant Stanzas

simpsonI’ve been a fan of Martin Simpson‘s work since his 2011 tour of Australia where I was able to catch him a couple of times.   But the live performance I’ll remember most was on a boat on the Upper Thames near Windsor England in 2012.

He was joined by great accordionist Andy Cutter and it was an enthralling performance. They played for a considerable time, even while the boat was going through a few river locks – a little disconcerting for the uninitiated.  They were finally forced to halt on captain’s orders and, along with the entire assembly, sit on the floor as we went under a very low bridge and the roof of the vessel descended considerably.  After the enforced intermission, they resumed with aplomb and Simpson provided further evidence (if any was needed) of his consummate guitar prowess and unique blend of folk and blues.

Martin’s new CD Vagrant Stanzas (Propermusic) is now available, in both single CD and double CD limited deluxe edition form.  The latter includes a twenty-one track autographed edition, seven bonus tracks plus a twenty page booklet containing extensive track notes by Simpson.

Here’s a live performance of Simpson doing “I Cannot Keep From Cryin’ Sometimes”:
