Papa Pilko And The Binrats – Third Time Lucky

papapilkoThird Time Lucky is the third studio release from Sydney, Australia seven-piece band Papa Pilko and the Binrats.

The band’s sound has been described as “wild blues and slick swingin’ country rock ‘n’ roll…with horns” and that’s exactly what you will hear on Third Time Lucky.  To celebrate the EP’s four track release, the band is taking their notoriously raucous show on the road.  Having already played in Sydney, they are heading to Brisbane and Melbourne – see dates below.
Recorded at Linear Recording Studio in Sydney, Third Time Lucky leaps out of the stereo, full of tremendous energy and atmosphere.  The opening track and first single “Poor Boy” conjures up the energy of their stage show, most notably in the caged-animal vocal outro, a result of keeping the band’s front man Cyrus Pilko holed in a windowless studio for three days!  The song unravels into a rollicking, booze-soaked procession of barreling drums, soaring horns and sharp guitar licks led by Pilko’s howling vocals.
In the same session they recorded “Good To Be Bad”, a songwriting collaboration between Pilko and trumpet player Tom Wilkinson.  The inspiration varies from Russian criminal songs to getaway car chases and a few bottles of Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum.  “Woman in Black” (this is a great track, see audio below) and “The Burning Falcon” were written just days before entering the studio, allowing a sense of spontaneity and freedom in the arrangements.
The EP is available through bandcamp.  I recommend that you get a copy and have a party.
