Organisers of the Roots n Blues n BBQ festival in Columbia Missouri has slipped in another enticing act, one I enjoyed up close this February on the Cayamo Cruise.  The Cactus Blossoms features tremelo guitars, intelligent songwriting and delightfully dreamy harmonies (a la The Brothers Louvin and Everly) abound with this band of Minnesota brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum.

When my brother and I started making music as The Cactus Blossoms there wasn’t a big plan. We cut our teeth performing some well known and obscure country songs that were popular or unpopular pre-1960, partly out of curiosity and deep appreciation, but mostly because it was fun. Early on, we were offered a residency at the Turf Club in St. Paul, Minnesota, so we got a band together and it became our weekly “practice-in-public” where we would pull out every song we could think of, no matter how well we knew it. It was our first chance to play all night and do whatever we wanted. Over the course of our year and a half at the Turf Club our repertoire had snowballed into an amalgam of original songs and a bunch of gut wrenching, “tongue-in-cheek” heartbreakers, that were 30 years older than us. Not everyone could tell what was new and what was old, and it didn’t really matter. They just seemed to enjoy it. That’s how the wheel got going and gave the illusion of spinning backwards. We weren’t born in the wrong era. We just got into some music from a different era and happened to make it our own. – Jack & Page,

JD McPherson followed up his interest in the band by producing their record  You’re Dreaming (2016) which was the culmination of several years of songwriting.  A guest spot in series three of the TV series Twin Peaks provided some well-deserved recognition for this talented bunch.  Here’s a clip of the band doing “Stoplight Kisses”:

The Cactus Blossoms will slot into the Sunday 1.15 pm space on the Great Southern Bank Stage.

First launched in 2007, the Roots n Blues n BBQ festival features over thirty artists representing the genres of roots, blues, gospel, country, folk, bluegrass, rock, and soul music – international, national, regional and local artists.

The three-day event was originally held in downtown Columbia and moved to the close-by St Stephen’s Lake Park.  Listening Through The Lens found it in 2014.  It’s held in a beautiful setting, Stephens Lake Park is huge and the two stages are well positioned at the bottom of rolling hills – the larger of the two stages, Missouri Lottery, featured more roots and country artists, while the Great Southern Bank Stage had more blues and rock acts.  Add to that the Front Porch Stage and every genre base is covered.

We are returning this year!  The Trifest Music Tour will descend on the beautiful college town of Columbia from 28 to 30 September.  Not only will we be present, we are offering the Whole Hog VIP option for our group members.  This covers:

  • two lounge areas, each within view of a stage
  • upfront viewing areas at both stages
  • small plate meals served in the lounges Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • appetizers & snacks served in the lounges
  • private restrooms
  • private access to our own cash bars

You can join us here, as well as embrace the Americana Music Festival and Conference in Nashville Tennessee and the Rhythm and Roots Reunion in Bristol Tennessee/Virginia.
