Stepping up for the Outlaw Country Cruise 2017

The Norwegian Jade

By Rob Dickens

Next week I will, like many others, be boarding the Norwegian Jade at the Port of Tampa Florida for the Outlaw Country Music Cruise.

Some information about the cruise.

Outlaw Country History

Based around a Sirius XM Satellite Radio Station “Outlaw Country’, the Cruise will be on its second voyage which is sold out.

The Boat

The Norwegian Jade is part of the Norwegian Cruise Line and is a hefty piece of equipment, with a length of almost 300 meters (1,000 feet) and a width (beam) of about 40 meters (125 feet).  It has 15 decks, carries 2,400 passengers and over 1,000 crew.

The Organisers

Outlaw Country Cruise is run by Sixthman which has been managing themed cruises since 2001, almost 100 of them in fact.

The Itinerary

Tampa is on the west coast of Florida and the boat does a circuit around the Gulf of Mexico.

Sunday, February 26, 2017 – Depart Tampa, FL

Monday, February 27 – Day At Sea

Tuesday, February 28 – Cozumel, Mexico

Wednesday, March 1 – Day At Sea

Thursday, March 2 – Arrive Tampa, FL

The Line-Up

There are over 70 performances during the voyage.

Plus there are Thai Chi classes (with Jim Lauderdale), Best Beard Contest, Sirius XM Sessions At Sea (with Steve Earle, Elizabeth Cook and Mojo Nixon), Renegade Cinema, Outlaw Yoga, Fat Tuesday Belly Flop, Whiskey Tasting (with the Bottle Rockets), Chicken S&@t Bingo (with Dale Watson) and more!

As well as stand alone performances from the following performers, there will be special collaborations that, from what I am told, make for some unique musical events.

Blackberry Smoke, The Mavericks, Lucinda Williams

Steve Earle & The Dukes, Billy Joe Shaver, Wanda Jackson

Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings, Joe Ely Band

Carlene Carter, Chris Knight, Dale Watson and his Lone Stars

Ray Benson, Old 97’s, Elizabeth Cook

Jim Lauderdale, Drivin’ N Cryin’, The Secret Sisters

Supersuckers, Bottle Rockets, The Mastersons

Rosie Flores, Jesse Dayton, Scott H. Biram

Laura Cantrell, Heybale!, Dallas Wayne

Roger Alan Wade, Mojo Nixon, Buick 6

My Aim

This is straight after the Cayamo Cruise – the same boat, the same day turnaround – hell, we’re in the same cabin!

To seek out as much music as I can.  There are many artists that I have not seen before and I am keen to catch as many of these as possible.  In particular, Bottle Rockets, Blackberry Smoke, The Mavericks, Billy Joe Shaver, Chris Knight and Scott H. Birham.  To see Old 97’s again, Hey Bale! along with Lucinda Williams.  So many others.

I will be reporting back when on dry land.  Stay tuned for stories and pictures.  Hopefully I can get an interview or two as well.  See you on the other side!
