Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley
Australian Tour 2016
Two of the finest players in the US Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley teamed up a while back, to great effect. The pair’s debut duo album Before The Sun Goes Down earned a Grammy nomination for the Best Bluegrass Album. Their next project The Country Blues was released on July 8 2016 (Compass Records), the pair build on the first one’s strengths to take their unique musical conversation to an even higher level. Eleven tracks, covers and originals of a beautiful sweep of styles from Hank Williams, Charlie Daniels, Merle Haggard, Grateful Dead, Sonny Boy Williamson.
I saw their dazzling abilities in a concert in Bristol (Virginia/Tennessee) just weeks ago and we are travelling to cover the MountainGrass festival next week, for which they are the undoubted headliners. It will be a joy to see them perform again and Australian fans of the best country and bluegrass playing will be able to feast on a few other shows as well.
Here’s a blazing example of their work – Stevie Ray Vaughn’s ‘Pride and Joy’:
