The entire show was simulcast on local radio station WMMS and many other stations around the country to an estimated audience of 3 million listeners. For years bootleg copies of the FM broadcast, in various degrees of quality, widely circulated among collectors and established this show as a legendary performance from Springsteen.
To put in some context here, Springsteen released his third album Born To Run in 1975. What followed was the highest critical praise and commercial success. Also, though, an elongated legal battle took place between Springsteen and his then manager and it wasn’t until 1978 that his next release Darkness On The Edge Of Town was ready. That album’s darker tone could be attributed to the legal battles or just as a point of difference from Born To Run. Either way, Darkness On The Edge Of Town hit the stores on June 2 1978 and became regarded as another, albeit darker, Springsteen and The E Street Band classic.
The entire show is now available in High Definition 24 bit / 192 kHz audio, as well as on a 3 CD set and MP3 and CD-Quality downloads.
