“Strange Fruit” is one of the darkest, most intense songs ever written about humanity (or inhumanity if you prefer).

The acclaimed American Songwriter magazine has written a piece on this song, originally recorded by Billie Holliday in 1944.

Southern trees bear strange fruit

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root

Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze

Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

– Abel Meeropol
