Buddy Miller, Martha Wainwright, Sloan Wainwright and Emmylou Harris – Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival 2013

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival 2014

From its beginnings in 2001, it’s become one of the largest music festivals in the USA.

For three days around October each year in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, a fabulous array of performers are on show in a free and unsponsored event conceived and subsidized by former venture capitalist Warren Hellman (1934 – 2011).

Last year I attended Hardly Strictly for the first time and was overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of roots artists performing there.  Over the three days, I saw Dave Alvin with Greg Leisz, First Aid Kit, Felice Brothers, Ryan Bingham, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, Martha Wainwright, Buddy Miller, Richard Thompson, Shovels and Rope, Pieta Brown, Seldom Scene, Tim O’Brien, Loudon Wainwright III, Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch, Fats Kaplin and The Deep Dark Woods.  And there were twice as many other performances that I wanted to catch but simply couldn’t fit in!  Pound-for-pound, it’s hard to go past this festival for sheer scale.  Being free, it does, however, mean that it is very busy and getting across from stage to stage can soak up some valuable performance time.

The event dates in 2014 are 3 to 5 October.

As in previous years, the line-up for 2014 is being sent out by a trickle – a sound bite with no names has been posted on the festival’s website with the first ten performers.  Now I have been through it a couple of times and think I’ve come up with 8 of the 10.

Parker Millsap

The McCrary Sisters

Blackie and The Rodeo Kings

Doug Seegers

Nikki Lane

Striking Matches

Shawn Colvin

Buddy Miller

I couldn’t work out artist numbers 4 and 8.  Check out the audio here for yourself – any comments or help appreciated.
