I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Chris Stapleton’s voice.  It was THAT powerful.

I had read very good reviews about a band called The Steeldrivers  and accordingly had purchased the band’s 2012 album Hammer Down.  In front of the band was a voice that was gravelly and soulful at the same time – equal measures of menacing growl and plaintive plea.  The power made you sit up and take notice.  I loved the voice and the band and I thought it was a standout sound – bluegrass but with southern soul, raw and passionate which didn’t follow the strictures of traditional ‘grass.

With some dismay I discovered that Stapleton left the band a little while back.  I saw The Steeldrivers in Raleigh NC at the Wide Open Bluegrass Festival in 2013.  I really enjoyed their set and obviously they are forging ahead with two new band members (including Gary Nichols on vocals).  For a while I’ve been wondering what Chris Stapleton has been up to.

Stapleton was raised in Paintsville, Kentucky, his father a coal miner.  He moved to Nashville TN in 2001 to pursue a music career.  He was the lead singer (and guitarist) of The Steeldrivers from 2008 to 2010 and then founded a rock band called The Jompson Brothers.  In 2013, Stapleton signed to Mercury Nashville as a solo artist.  His first single “What Are You Listening To” was released in 2013.

He was nominated for three Grammy Awards as a member of The Steeldrivers, including Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the songs “Blue Side of the Mountain” and “Where Rainbows Never Die”, and Best Bluegrass Album for Reckless.  He also won an International Bluegrass Music Association Emerging Artist of the Year Award.

He has gravitas as a songwriter as well, with compositions covered by Tim McGraw, Brooks and Dunn, Julie Roberts, Patty Loveless, Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Lee Ann Womack and the Lonesome River Band.  Stapleton has won six ASCAP Awards and has contributed to the soundtracks of several feature films including Cars 2 and Valentine’s Day.

Chris Stapleton very recently released a new song.  It is written by Kix Brooks and features in the movie Ambush at Dark Canyon.  Here’s a taste of his incredible voice on the new song “Go’n Down” which features on the movie  soundtrack (you might have to look hard for it as the movie may have sunk to DVD obscurity).

Here’s a live performance of his previous single – “What Are You Listening To?”.
