The late and great John Martyn. It’s hard to believe that he passed away as long ago as 2009.
I mentioned a while back about Island Records releasing (on 30th September) the expansive The Island Years Box Set – an exceptional collection of Martyn’s recordings. The full track listing has now been announced. This 18 disc set (yes 18 discs!) features all John Martyn’s Island Records studio albums alongside hours of unheard outtakes, new songs, and live recordings all packaged with extensive memorabilia. The word is that this is a one-off limited edition pressing and once this box set has sold out, it will not be re-pressed. In case you wanted to grab a copy, see here for pre-order.

Live at The Hanging Lamp Vinyl Release
Some of the content discovered for the Island Years box set includes Live at The Hanging Lamp which was recorded on 8th May 1972 in the tiny crypt of St. Elizabeth’s Church just off Richmond Hill. The atmosphere was tremendous and after playing his acoustic guitar John then ‘plugs in’ and delights the small audience with outstanding electric performances of “Sugar Lump” and experimental versions of “I’d Rather Be The Devil” and “Outside In”. Only 1000 copies of this performance will be released on 180 gram vinyl on the same date as the boxed set – 30th September.
